Exploring Manchester’s Little Ireland (St Patrick’s Weekend)

March 15 @ 2:00 pm - 3:45 pm GMT

Join Ed O’Glinert on our annual celebration of Irish Manchester.

We will celebrate St Patrickโ€™s Day and the Irish Festival by unearthing the best stories of Manchester’s Little Ireland, recalling Auntie’s Bar, stopping off at George Orwell’s doss house (well, the site of), searching for a whiff of the Waxieโ€™s Dargle, and maybe even enjoying a glass of Arthur Guinness’ invigorating if intoxicating alcoholic vegetable health drink at the end.

Here’s a thing. Can you believe that when Manchester triggered the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, the philanthropic local merchants and factory owners hired their workers from Ireland as they were cheaper and would accept lower wages than the Manchester locals?

Yes, the Irish were ripped off and they lived in the worst houses โ€“ in Little Ireland, the area around Oxford Road station.
